A Practical Guide to Flame Piercing on Heavy Steel Plate
When steel plate thickness climbs past a few inches, simply punching a starter hole is a job in itself. Flame piercing, the oxy-fuel technique for boring through thick sections with nothing but gas and oxygen, looks straightforward on the surface but hides a surprising number of traps. Get it wrong and you risk blowback, wasted material, or a nozzle buried in molten slag.
The core principle hasn't changed in decades: preheat the spot to kindling temperature, then release a high-pressure oxygen stream to burn through the plate. What makes or breaks the operation is the setup before the oxygen lever opens.
Edge starts are always preferred when a job allows them. Starting from the plate edge lets the cutting stream exit cleanly without fighting its own back pressure. But many thick plate components demand interior pierces, and that's where technique becomes everything. The preheat flame needs time—real time—to bring heavy material to a dull red glow. Rushing this step is the most common mistake on thick stock. A generous preheat period means the difference between a clean initial breakthrough and a violent eruption that damages the torch tip.
Nozzle height during piercing deserves careful attention. Starting slightly higher than normal protects the tip from the initial splash of molten material that erupts when the oxygen jet first punches through. Once the pierce is established and the jet penetrates cleanly, the torch drops to standard cutting height for the rest of the profile.
Watch the blowback. When the oxygen stream breaks through the bottom of the plate, a geyser of sparks and slag shoots upward. Tilting the torch a few degrees away from the operator and ensuring clear space beneath the plate prevents bounce-back from damaging equipment or creating a safety hazard.
For extremely thick sections over six inches, progressive piercing comes into play. The torch starts from a high position and moves downward in controlled increments as material burns away, preventing the kind of violent breakthrough that can extinguish the flame entirely. A patient, steady hand here beats aggressive speed every time.
Thick plate flame piercing isn't high-tech, but it rewards experience and discipline. Respect the preheat, protect the nozzle, and control the breakthrough. The rest takes care of itself.
